Toggling on the 100% cashmere option under the material section on eBay brings me a burst of joy. Why? Well, it’s simple. Secondhand cashmere is the best. And if you’re committed to taking care of it, these are pieces you’ll have for the rest of your life. For the longest time, this was the only way I could grow my cashmere collection. Even my overflowing sweater shelf at present is proof that the best way to acquire this material is preloved.
Here are my care tips to make them last a lifetime:
Examine listings on secondhand sites with extra care, looking for holes or snags that can often be hard to spot in the first few pics. Message the seller if anything looks suspect. You can get these repaired, but easier to just find something else in better condition.
Weird smell? Hang outside for a day and spray with a mixture of vodka and water. Then take it to the dry cleaner. This works for almost anything.
Cleaning your sweaters once a season is a chore, but well worth the effort. I used to use this to do it at home and now I leave it up to my friendly neighborhood cleaner.
Here’s a bunch of 100% cashmere finds, mostly under $100 and in varieties I hope will leave you inspired as we enter the last few months of winter.
