The temperatures start dropping, but not enough for you to reach for a parka or fish out a scarf from the back of your closet. Instead, you find yourself in the sartorial sweet spot know as Sweater As A Coat.

For those of you who want the Rory sweater from the pilot, search for Aran fisherman sweater on Poshmark/Depop! : r/GilmoreGirls

The patron saint of this look is none other than Rory Gilmore in the pilot episode of Gilmore Girls. The look is cozy, casual, and oozes with small town charm. Especially in a place like New York, it’s high risk and high reward—betting your entire day of activities on a singular wool sweater.

As a testament to my dedication to you, reader, and particularly, my friend, Amanda Rueben, I’ve decided to compile a ton of fisherman sweaters, most of them under $50.

Before we get into the picks, some things to keep in mind:

  1. Shopping secondhand (especially when sweaters are the target) makes it possible to get higher quality for a lower price.

  2. Handle with care! Try a sweater shaver and take your sweaters to be cleaned once a season.

  3. Bigger is better. I always take at least a Large in sweaters and when I’m shopping secondhand, usually an XL. Per the Rory reference, a little bagginess is darling.

  4. Men—all four of you that subscribe—I’m talking to you, too. See Chris Evans in Knives Out as reference.

Here are some new sweaters that feel vintage for those among us who still feel a little nervous about shopping secondhand—starting with an illustration on how you can use inspiration to guide even your firsthand shopping.
