I Swear By This Brand For Basics And Pieces I'll Have For Forty Years

I wrote a story about this brand for Instyle.com that I can’t find.
There’s a whole other Long Live about the peculiarities of freelance writing, but for now, know this. I loved this brand enough to pitch a story, visit the store, try on a plethora of pieces, and write about my top 15 pieces. And—host a giveaway here for paid subs. I’m talking ~$700 worth of brand new clothes for one lucky reader.
I’m referencing Buck Mason, of course. The brand has been around for over ten years. But in the last three-ish years, Tess Sullivan has been at the helm of the women’s design direction. She’s infused this instant heritage feeling married with materials that feel like the kind of thing you’d pass off to a grandkid. Her designs are smart, wearable above all else, and all play brilliantly with each other. Did I mention she’s incredibly kind and humble in real life?
We have to talk about the Buck Mason stores, which will make you believe in retail again. If you’re nearby, pop in and bring a pile of pieces into the dressing room. It’s inviting, laid back, and you get an immediate sense of California cool. As an uptight New Yorker, it’s worth pursuing. Plus, they curate vintage pieces, like those kinds of Levi’s you try to manifest on eBay to no avail, and carry giftables, too.
My personal favorite gift idea? Buy someone you adore the kind of sweat suit they’ll gladly wear in public. Buck Mason was kind enough to gift me this sweatshirt and these pants, which I padded around Mayflower Inn wearing one weekend.
But my most recent favorite and the piece I’m not entirely sure how I lived without is this black trench. It’s super simple—the perfect amount of simple—and the sleeves are long enough on me. Rare! I’m layering under it until it’s warm enough to go with a cropped jacket and feel grateful I have it every time I pull it on.
