My husband sold the bulk of his Criterion Collection DVD collection to finance part of our wedding and at the time it felt so romantic and now we both regret it (selling the DVDs, not the marriage lol). We fell in love over the DVD double feature of BEFORE SUNRISE and BEFORE SUNSET. And Seasons 1-3 of The Wire lol

Sounds romantic to me ❤️

Aww, that’s love! There are often 50% off Criterion sales through their website, Barnes & Noble, and a few other retailers. Maybe you can surprise him with the Before Trilogy blu-Ray set, or some other of his favorite films for a holiday, special occasion, or just date night. 💖

I have a handful of DVDS I'll never, ever throw away: Stranger than Fiction, Marie Antoinette, Before Sunset, Away We Go, the Way, Way Back...

Away We Go is one of my favorites! I also have it on DVD.

It does not get enough love! I really admire the scene in the bathtub when they discuss their mom.

Excellent curation

I love this experiment. I can’t articulate the overwhelm I feel trying to pick a show/movie each night - I like this as a thoughtful reset around the exhaustion. Also, re-watching any and all Whit Stillman (especially the initial preppy trilogy) is a yearly requirement.

YES it's such a reset

Absolutely love this idea, even more so now that I realize DVD players are like 1/10th the size they used to be! Having an 8yo, I can tell you that streaming platforms are a constant source of headaches. The parental controls are clunky at best and then add in the fact that it is impossible, yes literally impossible, to delete the Youtube app off my tv. The worst.

they're so slim!!!

You might enjoy Girlfriends directed by Claudia Weil (New York, artist, female friendship) and Showing Up with Michelle Williams.

Long live physical media! We got rid of most streaming services, but we have Apple TV solely for F1 ( I have yet to use the app myself - my husband sets races up). I have been rebuilding my VHS, DVD & Blu-ray collection over the last five years, and it’s so nice to walk over to our shelves and choose something fun to watch.

such a good feeling

I also cut streaming services this year, all of Q1 for my budget journey and turned to DVDs. Some I purchased on eBay and others gifted/lent by friends. I never dabble into library but consider me influenced now. Since I have a PlayStation there was no additional cost for the player itself. It was so fun being back in that DVD menu! I’ve acquired a lot of British TV shows and still turn to these when I do my at home manicures. I’m glad to be back on streaming services though for this reality tv Renaissance that is Summer House reunion and Love Island premiere.

We have a rule of only one streaming service at a time; no schedule, just when we feel like we've exhausted one we'll get another with a buzzy show that sounds good. However, the one we ALWAYS have is Kanopy, the library streaming platform. What they have depends on your system, but obviously being in big cities usually means a robust amount available. Ours (Boston) is always well stocked in rom-coms, Criterion, foreign, and BBC series.

Wow…liberty streaming platform????!!!!

It’s free with a library card. Libraries are amazing.

this is so good to know

My husband and I keep having a kidding-not-kidding, maybe-we-should conversation about opening a video rental store. We yearn for physical media so much and it feels like more and more people are echoing that desire right now. We should probably start with your experiment first though 😉
