I grew up with the notion of a Spring Jacket. This is what we called a light jacket and it represented wear far beyond March and April in the Midwest. It worked as a final layer when running out the door on a cool summer night. It was the kind of thing we’d stuff in the van just in case. And as an adult + New Yorker, I appreciate the notion more than ever.
The barn jacket goes by many names and iterations—maybe your Spring Jacket is a denim number or a chore jacket or a cashmere wrap. I have no clue! But this Midwestern gal loves a barn jacket for its classic, comfortable fit. And the best part? This is the kind of piece that almost demands to be bought secondhand. All the new versions just look so…new. I’ll include a few favs, but for everyone else, here are a bunch of barn jackets under $75.
Some general thoughts before we dive in:
Size up. With every jacket, but especially with a barn jacket. You’ll be wearing this with winter layers, too, so try it on with sweaters and button downs.
Try buttoning the top buttons only. If you own a barn jacket, this is a great way to start experimenting with it!
Be realistic about what can come out in the wash. Maybe you’re into a distressed look, but since a lot of these secondhand pieces come from real farm work, there are oil stains and rips that might take the look from country chic to, well, a little more country.
I love them paired with boat shoes (these!!) or loafers and socks the most.
