I need all my womenswear to be Paul Newman inspired. Who do you think is his female sartorial counterpart is?

Expand full comment

YES!! Katherine Hepburn? But I also think outfit inspo is genderless ❤️❤️

Newman's style, like Redford, Mcqueen, old school Harrison Ford (just search old photos of him and...you might love the shorts photo of Harry lol), Ralph Lauren regardless of age, all have this "timeless" style to it, which is so nicely translational across ANY gender.

Denzel also nails this today.

Hugh Grant has done a mostly good job of doing this too, though staying in the city dress lane. He'll have some trendy aspects, but overall, none of his older 90s or 2000s outfits have aged badly. Includes most of his movie outfits too (except for his Music & Lyrics character, haha) -- Notting Hill is a great inspo, but About a Boy (which is a different veer) is nicely done too. And like all the previous mentions, comfortable style for all.

Agreed on Hugh Grant!

...I think there needs to be a follow-up article here, Erika!! Even a collab post with peeps like Clayton at Sprezza.

He will always be a babe. My cousin is Joanne Woodward’s neighbor, so that is my connection to Paul Newman beyond the salad dressing in my fridge.

Not exactly accessible but a key part of his style lexicon- the Rolex Daytona!! It’s totally spiritually aligned with the clean egalitarian elan you broke down here.

Paul Newman is an all-time hottie and these photos...my god, the charm!! Obsessed with these tips and actually very excited to apply them to my closet, which I often fear is too full of boring basics/neutrals. Now it feels like a *look*!

Paul Newman, SO chic. Especially in a patterned woollen rollneck sweater.

The chemistry test video between Newman and & James Dean is one of the steamiest PG rated things I've seen!

I see your Paul Newman and raise you Newman & Robert Redford. The Sting is one of my favorite movies of all time.

Also, I just snagged those vintage Randolph Engineering sunglasses you shared - fun fact, the guy who's selling them says it was his father's and he serve in the Pararescue Air Force.

That was a nice surprise this morning (hello from Hawaii)!

Absolutely saving this guide to dress my husband. I love a menswear look on myself as well but I’m forever jealous of the sheer simplicity of masculine style. It would be so easy to be the best dressed man around, so why do they all look like athleisure slobs? Lol.

Agree 100% I forwarded to my husband LOL
